In 2026, being found means being cited, not just ranked. 68% of US Google searches now end without a click to any website. When an AI Overview appears, Google keeps 58% of the clicks that used to go to the top result. And only 12% of the URLs ChatGPT cites rank in Google's top ten for the same query — citation and ranking have become different games.
The good news in the data: the strongest predictor of AI visibility is not backlinks (correlation 0.22) but brand mentions across the web (0.66), and the tactics that earn citations — clear entities, quotable facts, first-party data, presence where the models look — are things a small operator can do. This article lays out the numbers, what actually correlates with being cited, what the tracking tools cost, and a checklist to run on your own pages.

Read those together and the picture is not "AI killed search". Google is still where the volume is, but Google now answers a fifth of queries itself and keeps most of the clicks. AI assistants are growing fast from a small base and send little traffic — but they increasingly shape what people believe before they ever search. Semrush's analysis found commercial-intent queries triggering AI Overviews grew 71% in six months, and its modelling suggests an AI-search visitor is worth about 4.4 times a traditional organic one, because they arrive pre-decided.
The shift also changed who gets seen. Similarweb's data shows ChatGPT's share of AI traffic fell from about 76% to 53% in a year while Gemini rose to roughly 27%. Optimising for "ChatGPT" is already too narrow; the target is the class of answer engines.
The most important finding for anyone with an SEO habit is that the old signals do not transfer cleanly.
So the models look in different places than Google's ten blue links, they look at different pages of the same site, and each engine has its own favourite sources. That is why a page can rank #1 and never be cited, and why a page ranking #14 for the head term can be the one ChatGPT quotes.
Ahrefs ran the largest correlation study on this — 75,000 brands, August 2025, updated in December. The result reorders the SEO playbook.
| Signal | Correlation with AI Overview visibility | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mentions on the web (unlinked) | 0.66 | Ahrefs, Aug 2025 |
| Brand mentions on YouTube | 0.74 — the strongest single signal found | Ahrefs, Dec 2025 |
| Brand search volume | Strongest predictor in 5WPR's 680M-citation dataset (0.33) | 5WPR, May 2026 |
| Referring domains (backlinks) | 0.22 | Ahrefs, Aug 2025 |
| Adding JSON-LD schema | No meaningful citation lift in a 1,885-page test | Ahrefs, reported 2026 |
The interpretation is uncomfortable for link builders and liberating for everyone else: models cite what the web talks about. Being mentioned — in articles, forum threads, videos, podcasts, other people's comparisons — matters three times more than being linked. Schema markup, the tactic every "GEO guide" leads with, did nothing measurable in the one controlled test I could find. The Princeton/Georgia Tech GEO paper (the one that named the field) found content-level changes — adding statistics, citations and quotations — could lift generative-engine visibility by up to 40%, but that is about the page itself, not its markup.
One line to remember: ranking is earned by links to your page. Citation is earned by mentions of your name. They are correlated, but the second one is the one that is growing.
Here is what I now do to every page I want cited, in order of evidence behind it.
I used this list on my own guide to writing product reviews that rank and get cited, and on every page of this hub. Whether it works is measurable, which brings us to tooling.

Every major SEO vendor now sells this, almost always as a separate line item. Prices from each vendor's pricing page, 4 September 2026.
| Tool | AI visibility pricing | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | From $199/mo on top of a subscription; prompt packs $50–$250/mo | The deepest dataset; expensive for a solo operator |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99/mo add-on (annual), or bundled in the $199/mo Starter plan | 25 prompts, four engines at entry level |
| Surfer AI Search Analytics | $158/mo (annual) | Separate from its $49–$299 content plans |
| Writesonic | From $79/mo | AI visibility is the core product |
| Profound | Starter $99/mo, Growth $399/mo | Enterprise-oriented; supplies 5WPR's citation data |
| SEnuke AI | Included in the $79/mo Entrepreneur plan as "AI Citation intelligence" | Unproven until 8 Sept launch; depth of measurement not published |
The economics are simple. A solo operator wanting to track AI citations is looking at $79–$199 a month for a dedicated tool. SEnuke AI's argument is that the same capability sits inside a $79 platform alongside the strategy layer. If its AI Citation module measures even a fraction of what Brand Radar does, the platform pays for itself on that line alone; if it is a token feature, the comparison collapses. That is the first thing I will test on launch day, and the review says so.
The playbook I use to get pages cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, plus the launch-day update to my SEnuke AI review. Comes with your free Growth Gap Scanner result.
How often and how prominently your brand or pages appear in AI-generated answers — Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot — as opposed to traditional ranked results. It is measured by tracking which sources those engines cite for a set of prompts.
The practice of making content more likely to be used and cited by generative AI answer engines. The term comes from a 2023 Princeton/Georgia Tech/IIT paper that found content changes such as adding statistics, citations and quotations could lift visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.
Not reliably. Ahrefs found only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot rank in Google's top 10 for the query. Even Google's own AI Overviews now draw only 38% of citations from top-10 pages, down from 76%.
Brand mentions across the web. Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study found web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.66, YouTube mentions at 0.74, versus 0.22 for referring domains. 5WPR's data found brand search volume the strongest predictor.
Not measurably. Ahrefs reported that adding JSON-LD schema to 1,885 pages produced no meaningful citation lift. Schema is still useful for rich results in traditional search.
From $79 a month (Writesonic) to $199 and up (Ahrefs Brand Radar), with Semrush at $99 as an add-on, Surfer at $158 and Profound at $99–$399. SEnuke AI includes an AI citation module in its $79 plan, unproven until its 8 September 2026 launch.
Blocking retrieval crawlers means you cannot be cited. Many sites allow retrieval bots (used for answering) while restricting training; check your robots.txt for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended.
