How to get cited by AI search engines in 2026: answer the question in the first 60 words with a number in it, put sourced statistics on the page, name your brand consistently, get mentioned on the sites each engine reads (Reddit for Perplexity, YouTube for Google), and let the retrieval crawlers in. Ranking alone does not do it: only 12% of the URLs ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot cite rank in Google's top 10 for the same query, and brand mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.66 against 0.22 for backlinks.
This page is the working version of that list: what "cited" means, where each engine looks, seven steps in order of evidence, how to check whether you are cited today for free, and what a tool such as SEnuke AI's AI Citations screen adds. The numbers come from Ahrefs, 5WPR and the Princeton paper that named the field, each linked where it appears.
Free: the Get-Cited Kit. A 12-point AI citation checklist built from the numbers on this page, an llms.txt generator and the five prompts that show whether ChatGPT and Perplexity cite you — what SEnuke AI charges about $7 per scan for, done by hand. Get the kit →

A citation is a link or a named source inside an AI answer: the footnote in Perplexity, the source card under a Google AI Overview, the "Sources" list in ChatGPT search. The engine runs a live retrieval for the question, picks a handful of pages, and quotes them. So the pages it can cite are limited to what its crawler may fetch, the pages it picks are chosen by a different process from Google's ten blue links, and the brand it names is the one the web talks about most.
Ahrefs ran 15,000 long-tail queries through the major assistants in August 2025 and checked whether each cited URL ranked in the top 10 for the same query. The overlap is small everywhere except Perplexity.
| AI engine | Cited URLs in Google top 10 | Cited URLs in Bing top 10 |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (in-text citations) | 8.0% | 8.1% |
| Gemini | 8.6% | 14.0% |
| Copilot | 8.2% | 16.6% |
| Perplexity | 28.6% | 3.3% |
| Google AI Overviews | 76% in 2025; 38% by March 2026 | — |
Sources: Ahrefs, "Only 12% of AI cited URLs rank in Google's top 10", 11 August 2025 (Linehan, Guan); AI Overviews figures from Ahrefs' 863,000-keyword follow-up, March 2026.
The AI Overviews line is the one to watch: from three quarters of citations out of the top 10 in 2025 to 38% by March 2026, because "query fan-out" splits a question into sub-questions and pulls the page that ranks for one of those. A position-14 page that answers a specific follow-up precisely now beats a position-3 page that answers everything vaguely.
What does predict citation: Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study put brand mentions across the web at a correlation of 0.66 with AI Overview visibility, YouTube mentions at 0.74, and referring domains at 0.22. Being talked about beats being linked to, by a factor of three.
What is not on the list: llms.txt (97% of files are never fetched, details here), JSON-LD as a citation lever (Ahrefs' 1,885-page test found no measurable lift, though schema still earns rich results in classic search), and buying links.
The engines do not share a source list. 5WPR's State of AI Citations 2026, built on Profound's 680 million tracked citations from August 2024 to June 2025, found that only about 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity.
| Engine | Favourite sources | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Wikipedia is 47.9% of its top-10 source share; then encyclopaedic and reference sites | Be the reference page for a narrow question; keep facts and dates explicit; claim your entity on the reference sites that list your category |
| Perplexity | Reddit is 46.7% of its top-10 share; also G2, Gartner, NerdWallet, PCMag, TripAdvisor, Yelp | Answer questions in the subreddits your buyers use, under your own name; get listed and reviewed on the aggregator for your category |
| Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | YouTube about a fifth of citations, Google-owned properties around 43%; the rest from pages that rank for fan-out sub-questions | Publish one walkthrough video per product; structure pages so each section answers one sub-question |
| Gemini, Copilot | Closer to Bing's index than Google's (14% and 16.6% Bing top-10 overlap) | Make sure Bing Webmaster Tools has your sitemap; Bing is the retrieval layer for more assistants than people assume |
Reddit citations across platforms grew roughly 450% during 2025 (5WPR). Values are volatile; the report itself says so.
"ChatGPT SEO" is the phrase people search for; the practice is closer to PR than to link building. The overlap with classic SEO is real but partial.
Google's own AI features guidance says the same: no new machine-readable files are needed for AI Overviews and AI Mode; the unique, helpful content that ranks is what gets used (exact wording quoted on the llms.txt page).
Before paying for tracking, run five prompts by hand in ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and note which sources appear:
Repeat monthly and keep the answers in a sheet. That is the manual version of what the trackers sell for $99 to $199 a month (Semrush, Surfer, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound; prices on the AI search visibility guide). The five prompts, with a scoring sheet, are in the free Get-Cited Kit.
SEnuke AI's Search & Growth area has an AI Citations module with nine checks: entity readiness, answer coverage, schema, sources, sitemap, robots.txt, llms.txt, citation assets and validation. In my Entrepreneur account an AI citation scan is priced at 250 AI Capacity units, out of the plan's 4,000 units a month; at the $29-per-1,000 Capacity Pack rate that is about $7 a scan. Every chargeable action shows the estimate before it runs.
After a week: the checklist is the right checklist, and it runs against your own pages rather than a prompt panel. Not yet known: how it measures citations across engines afterwards, or whether the "citation assets" it proposes get cited; execution is untested on my side. My published verdict stands: best idea in the category, monthly only, not yet worth $97 for an operator whose job is organic-search data. Details in the review's AI search section. Any site change it proposes goes through the Approval Center first.
SEnuke AI's AI Citations module covers entity readiness, answer coverage, schema and llms.txt in one scan. Buy through my link and my 9 bonuses come with it; annual, Business and Agency buyers also get the AI Visibility Scanner, which checks how your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Details on the bonuses page.
Answer one specific question per page in the first 60 words with a concrete number, cite primary sources on the page, name your brand consistently, allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot in robots.txt, and earn mentions on the reference and review sites ChatGPT draws from (Wikipedia alone is 47.9% of its top-10 source share). Only about 8% of ChatGPT's cited URLs rank in Google's top 10, so ranking is not a shortcut.
For Perplexity, be present on Reddit and on the review aggregators for your category, because Reddit is 46.7% of its top-10 sources; it also cites Google top-10 pages 28.6% of the time, the most of any engine. For Google AI Overviews, structure pages so each section answers one sub-question, since only 38% of citations now come from top-10 pages, and publish a YouTube walkthrough, since YouTube is about a fifth of AI Overview citations.
No. Ahrefs found that only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot rank in Google's top 10 for the same query. Perplexity is the exception at 28.6%. Citation and ranking are correlated but separate games.
ChatGPT SEO is making pages more likely to be retrieved and cited in ChatGPT's search answers. It shares crawlability, clear answers and original data with classic SEO, but link building matters far less (0.22 correlation with AI visibility versus 0.66 for brand mentions) and ranking position is a weak proxy. The academic term for the practice is generative engine optimization (GEO).
For Perplexity, practically yes: Reddit accounts for 46.7% of its top-10 source share, and Reddit citations across AI platforms grew about 450% during 2025. For ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews Reddit matters less; Wikipedia and YouTube respectively dominate there.
If you block the retrieval crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot; Google AI Overviews use the normal Googlebot), the engines cannot fetch your pages and cannot cite you. Many sites block training-only access and allow retrieval; check your robots.txt line by line.
It runs a nine-point AI Citations audit on your pages (entity readiness, answer coverage, schema, sources, sitemap, robots.txt, llms.txt, citation assets, validation) for 250 AI Capacity units per scan, about $7 on the Entrepreneur plan. Whether its citation measurement across engines matches dedicated trackers is not yet published or tested; proposed site changes go through the Approval Center.
